Raider is the Therapy Service Dog (VA Certified), to an Iraq War, U.S. Army Veteran. Raider is his best friend, and what helps him get through his day to day struggles with PTSD. The pair have been together for years and have formed the strongest bond possibly imagined between handler and dog. Raider is also a loving buddy to his kids (he has four two legged kids) at home, and the always brave boy for the lady of the home.
On 08/28/2014, Raider, injured his right eye while his family was at work. The following 24 hours was spent on the phone with what seemed like every vet in the Phoenix metro area including into Mesa, Scottsdale, Gilbert, Chandler, Glendale, and so on seeking help for Raider. After finally getting a hold of Raider's primary vet which could not see him without a down payment his family did not have, they were directed to Alta Vista Veterinary Hospital. Alta Vista agreed to see Raider for a $45 exam charge at 7PM on 08/29/2014, then would give an estimate for treatment from there.
Alta Vista Veterinary Hospital worked to remove splinters from Raiders right eye without surgery as his family did not have the amount needed to cover the procedure. Care Credit was applied for, but was not approved. Total estimate given for treatment was $1400. $200 was paid to Alta Vista Veterinary Hospital, for the $450 procedure Raider received on 08/29/2014.
Raider is home from his first visit with Alta Vista Veterinary Hospital. A HUGE thanks to Dr. Johnson, Staff Member Leslie, Staff Member Angie, and (sorry didn't get your name) an unknown male vet tech. However Raider is now blind in his right eye, and it's going to be a long road to recovery for him. He has two weeks until they can see him again, and give a positive clear answer as to whether or not he will have to have the eye removed.
The Damage to Raiders Eye includes but is not limited to..
Loss of Eye Fluid.
Eye Fluid Leak.
Shrunken Eye.
Destroyed Iris.
Ruptured Eye Lens.
Torn Optic Nerve.
Cornea Lacerations.
Lacerations to the Eye Lids.
Basically he jumbled his eye around like a scrambled egg. But he's not out of the clear even after his initial visit with Alta Vista. Currently Raider has raised $145 towards the $1400 estimate. Vet bills are still due and are not done accumulating with a total figure. The goal amount is just the estimate (this cannot be stressed enough). Raiders family cannot afford the current vet bills let a lone the continued care/exams Raider desperately needs on their own. If they have to completely remove his eye the vet costs will soar. And while the lady of the home works as a manager, and Raider's owner/handler works as a medical assistant, they are barely making ends meet as it is.
Raider is now showing signs of Glaucoma, which is very painful and could cause total loss of the eye according to the vet. His eye also continues to leak fluid, bleed, and is causing him pain/irritation. He cries constantly despite trying to make him as comfortable as possible. His family is pleaing with the public to please help save this best friend and service dog, because without pay the vet cannot continue and without current care Raider is at risk for infection which could result in having to put him down.
