Our wonderful friend, Rachel Winter Jones, is facing yet another tough challenge -- Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML).
The diagnosis is likely a secondary cancer following her recent breast cancer treatment. AML is a fast-growing form of cancer of the blood and bone marrow, and Rachel is now in very agressive treatment in hospital in Manchester, England.
Rachel is much loved by so many people who want to support her and her family, so we started this campaign. The funds will help during this time when neither Rachel nor her husband Marc can work -- while she undergoes major treatment and Marc takes care of their two children, Roxanne (aged 11) and Sammy (aged 8), settling them into a new home and schools in a new country.
Everyone who meets Rachel is charmed by her open, friendly, and happy character. She's funny, positive, generous, and sings like a beautiful bird (Rachel is from Wales ...). She adores Marc and the kids -- they are a really close family -- and has friends around the world who just love her.
And now we can do something to give back a little to our friend, and help her through this new and tough challenge.
A little background ... in 2014, while living in Washington DC, Rachel was diagnosed with breast cancer. She went through chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, and numerous setbacks along the way. But in true Rachel style, she faced the treatment with humor (check out the pink wig photo) and her trademark fabulous positive attitude.
After that difficult time, Rachel and her family made the big decision to move home to England, to be closer to her parents who were facing their own challenges, and to start a new chapter.
Shortly after arriving in Manchester, a routine blood test showed problems with her bone marrow, and after a bone marrow biopsy on August 14 Rachel was diagnosed with AML.
Treatment for AML is brutal — very quickly after the diagnosis, she went through intensive chemo, and will stay in hospital for a further 4 to 5 weeks to be closely monitored and treated for any infection now that her blood counts and immune system are so low.
Around September 22 another bone marror biopsy (no fun at all ...) will show if the bone marrow is responding to the chemo. It will be a big milestone.
Rachel is such a strong, wonderful person (who else got married in a bright red gown?!), and she is fighting this like a tiger, just as she did before with her previous challenges.
I cannot thank you enough for any contribution you can make to raise funds for our dear friend. She is a real gem.
