Alternative break trip: Haiti

Hello,

As many of you know I am currently a junior at Concordia University in Portland, OR studying Nursing with a minor in Psychology. I have been selected to go to Port-au-Prince, Haiti along with 9 other students and 2 staff advisors in May 2013.

The earthquake that struck Haiti in 2010 killed more than 220,000 people, and injured more than 300,000 people and left more than 1 million people homeless. As of today 519,000 people are still living in tents. The earthquake created about 10 million cubic meters of debris and as of today only half has been removed. Nearly 1 in 2 people (about 4.5 million) are food insecure.

On this trip we are partnering with Solid Rock church through Grace International which is a local organization working to rescue, restore and relieve Haiti after the debilitating earthquake in 2010. We will be assisting with feeding programs, medical and dental clinics, orphanages, educational institutions, refugee centers, and other local programs that are working to revive this community.

I am incredibly excited about being selected for this trip because I am committed to serving my community as well as serving those in need. I hope to make a difference in the lives of those who were affected by the 2010 earthquake. I know that this will be an incredible trip, full of eye opening experiences.

In order to go on this trip in am responsible for $2000 to cover the cost of transportation, food, housing and project supplies. I will be partaking in many fundraisers; however, I know that additional money will be needed. I hope that you will consider making a financial contribution to help me participate in this trip.
