Medical Mission Trip to Guatemala

Donation protected
Hello Friends & Family! Thank you so much for taking the time to read my story!

During Spring Break of 2015 I will have the AMAZING opportunity to travel to Guatemala for a mission trip with a team of 19 other American Medical Student Association members!! I have always wanted to go on a medical mission trip, but now I actually have the ability to go and I am SO excited about what we will be able to do! During our time in Guatemala, we will set up a medical and dental clinic in a location that does not have access to regular healthcare. For the past several years, AMSA has teamed up for a mission trip with an American doctor and Guatemalan doctors to provide medical care to Guatemalan communities in need. During these trips, students are able to perform dental procedures, work in a pharmacy handing out medications, and assist the physicians in diagnosing patients. This will be a wonderful opportunity for me to learn more about the medical profession, to learn medical Spanish, and to learn about diseases that are prevalent in Hispanic countries.

Why am I passionate about going on this mission trip? There are SO many reasons why, but I will share two of them. First, I think that one of the most important things that a doctor can do is talk to the patient, face to face, in his or her own language. This is why I am so passionate about learning Spanish. I work in an Emergency Room that sees many Spanish-speaking patients, and I see the awkward way that non-Spanish-speaking doctors interact with Spanish-speaking patients. It truly creates barriers to being treated and this is not how I want my future patients to be treated. I believe that by going on this trip I will be able to be exposed to a lot of medical Spanish. This will allow me to learn more of the language and to be one step closer to being able to interact with non-English speaking patients in the future. Second, ever since I decided that I wanted to become a doctor I have wanted to go on a medical mission trip in order to get first-hand experience in the medical field and to determine if it was really what I wanted to do with my life. Since becoming an ER scribe, however, I have decided, without a doubt, that this is what I want to do with my life. Being a scribe has given me a lot of experience with how the medical system works. Now, I want to go on a mission trip in order to be more involved with medical treatment and interacting with patients. I have seen the doctor’s side of medicine and I really wish to learn more about the patient’s side of medicine.

The cost of this trip will include the airfare, transportation, supplies when in Guatemala, and other items necessary for the trip. It would be amazing if you could help support me financially either by donating or by sharing this link. Any prayers would be greatly appreciated as well, both for the team members and physicians and for the trip itself!

Thank you for your time and I can’t wait to share my experiences with all of you as the time comes. Thank you in advance for your thoughts, prayers, and support!
