The story began with a church, a baby and a phone call. Adam and Liz Hertz received a phone call one day simply to ask for a telephone number. While speaking with their pastor's wife, the Hertz's were told of a baby needing a safe home. Days passed and Adam could not get the baby off his mind. Adam took it upon himself to find out everything he could about the baby. He did not stop until he was face to face with Baby RJ.
Three days later and with the understanding temporary custody would be for only six months, Adam and Liz were handed Baby RJ wearing only a t-shirt. Having two older children, the Hertz's had nothing for a baby. All they had to do was ask and their church community rallied with support. When members from River Oaks Community Church heard the needs of Baby RJ and the Hertz family, clothes, diapers, strollers, and even babysitters were donated. RJ quickly had all the material things needed. Adam and Liz began to give him the things he had never had: stability, routine, and safety. Later when RJ's health concerns became apparent, Adam and Liz only began to love him and fight for him even more.
Now, almost a year later, RJ is a cherished part of the family. His toys line the living room, his sippy's fill the dish rack and safety latches lock every door and cabinet. There could truly be no better ending to this story, than for Adam and Liz to adopt RJ.
The Hertz's are asking for help one more time. Being a deputy sheriff and a teacher, and not originally ever thinking of adoption, the costs associated with this process are over whelming.
