Help us raise $5,000 to fund a 6-month pilot of a new dedicated harm reduction position at Red Emma's!
As many of you know, it’s been a hard year for Red Emma’s. We’ve weathered personal and collective crises, an armed robbery, a shooting inside our space, the closure of other businesses on our block, and the pressures placed upon us by the conflicting interests in a neighborhood that stands on the brink of gentrification. And through it all, we’re still here. We’re still serving dollar coffees, and making kick-ass vegan and vegetarian food, selling the books nobody else will sell, booking the events that nobody else will host, and providing a welcome space for all. Because we believe that Baltimore needs Red Emma’s. And because we need Red Emma’s - not just for our jobs, but for our communities and for ourselves.
Earlier this year, the amazing folks at the Fund for Democratic Communities offered to support us in launching a new community harm reduction position onsite at the store. The Space Host will do dual duty: they will help us to create a welcoming atmosphere in the cafe and, at the same time, they will listen, learn, and help us to develop protocols and practices that adequately meet the needs of the diverse set of patrons who we welcome into our space on a daily basis. After all, what’s safe for some, is not safe for all, and it’s hard to fully negotiate those contradictions while you have your hands fully of dirty dishes, or are trying to take orders!
For every donation of $100 or less that we receive, F4DC will match that up to $5,000 - giving us $10,000 to launch a 6-month pilot program! And if we raise more than $5,000, we can fund a longer pilot! Every dollar helps to get us there, so please donate what you can!
