Our elementary kids have been planning and practicing weekly for over 6 months to compete in Destination Imagination. In February, they competed at the Regional level and placed to advance to States. In March, they competed at the State Level. They placed 1st in their category, Technical Maze Craze (engineering), and also 1st for Highest Instant Challenge against other teams in their category.
It is a high honor to represent the state of Virginia and our kids need your help to compete at the international level at the end of May in Knoxville, Tennessee.
Our team, the Random Bottomless Optical Pits (aka RBOP) is comprised of 2 - 4th graders (Sasha and Shamanth) and 5 - 5th graders (Annabelle, Ella, Gretchen, Mark, and Rutva). They are led by Team Manager Stephanie and Assistant Team Manager Sara.
The team is asking for donations to cover the cost of sending all 7 participants and both team managers for the competition (We have to have at least one with us or the team cannot compete). This covers registration, lodging and meals while there. This cost does not cover travel expenses or meals outside of the competition time.
Registration, lodging, and food costs for this trip must be paid in full by May 2, 2018 for the team to attend.
RBOP is a close group of students from Echo Lake Elementary School in Glen Allen, VA. They have created a maze traveler (named Mr. Twix) which utilizes electromagnets to guide him through a maze. They had to come up with a story to also perform during their travels. Inside the maze, they must also remove an object from the maze and transform a prop. This has taken a lot of innovation and practice from the team. They have all brought their skills of creativity, engineering, team work, and laughter to the challenge. They have multiple props that will need to be driven to Knoxville to compete in this challenge. They will need to bring along extra supplies and make repairs and adjustments on site and also be ready for issues that may arise during their challenge. There are 4 possible maze setups and the team has been practicing with them all. They have to move props and change manipulations of the props depending on which maze they randomly choose in a matter of minutes. All team members play an integral part in the success of the challenge.
The team will also be competing in an instant challenge. This is an unknown challenge that has a set time, small amount of instruction, and limited supplies. The teams compete to see who adapts to the challenge.

DI is important to me because I get to meet new people and learn how to think in complicated ways!" - Annabelle
"It is something we have been working hard for. It keeps us motivated to work harder. We enjoy working together in a creative way. It will be a great experience to meet people from around the globe." -Rutva
"I like DI because it gives you a chance to meet new people of many cultures and colors. I can't wait to go to Globals for a chance to experience that. I also can't wait to go to all the workshops for technology and more!" - Gretchen

Destination Imagination (DI) is an educational nonprofit that prepares students for a future that is rapidly evolving. DI does this through a project-based learning experience that applies the creative process across seven different STEAM-based (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) Challenges. Through the DI Challenge Experience, students acquire and practice the skills needed to thrive in school, careers and beyond. More than two million students have participated in Destination Imagination.
The Destination Imagination Challenge Experience is 100-percent kid-driven. Over the course of the school year, students work together in teams to generate ideas, research different topics and techniques, and plan and build a solution to their preferred DI Team Challenge. Teams then present their solutions at local tournaments. The top-tier DI teams from around the world have the opportunity to showcase their projects on the international stage at Global Finals. Globals is an experience beyond what our kids can imagine!
Global Finals is the culminating event of every Destination Imagination (DI) season. DI teams that advance past Regional and Affiliate (state/country) Tournaments are invited to participate in Global Finals—the world’s largest celebration of creativity. The scheduled festivities include the Destination Imagination Tournament, interactive exhibits, pin trading, skills workshops, international events, collaborative games and activities, and more. It is a week packed with 8,000 students, 17,000 attendees, 15+ countries represented, and 40+ workshops for our kids over the course of the week! Workshops are sponsored by companies such as NASA, Oracle, 3M, and Broadway just to name a few.
