Project Rafiki for WAMATA

Donation protected

BACKGROUND:  During a July 2017 study abroad program, students and faculty of Western Kentucky University partnered with WAMATA and The Department of Social Work at Hubert Kairuki Memorial University (HKMU) in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, East Africa to create a food assistance program.  WAMATA is a community-based organization that offers services to men, women, youth, and families who are living with HIV/AIDS.  The largest concern for the members of WAMATA is their lack of food and nutrition.  Many of the members have been abandoned by their families, are unable to obtain employment due to stigmatization, and have no means by which to make a living.  WAMATA aims to prevent and control the spread of HIV/AIDS, reduce its impact, and enhance the quality of life and support through advocacy, education, and communication.

VISION:  Families at WAMATA living with HIV/Aids should be able to access the food they need in order to increase their health and well-being.  Six families per month within WAMATA are provided food.  (There are numerous families that attend WAMATA, so food donations are rotated among members each month in order to assist as many people as possible).

GOAL:  Project Rafiki supports and provides nutritional food for the members at WAMATA.  The goal is to raise a minimum of $160.00 per month by collecting donations from various groups, organizations, and businesses. This budget provides enough non-perishable food to distribute to six families each month!  Items purchased with donations include: beans, cooking oil, powdered milk, rice, salt, sugar, tea bags, water, and whole meal flour. As services progress, educating people in the United States about Project Rafiki will enhance opportunities for these individuals' food sustainability.

SUCCESS:  So far, WKU's Department of Social Work, The Project Rafiki Advisory Board, Bowling Green Rotary Club, multiple WKU student organizations, various churches and more have donated enough funds to continuously feed six families per month ever since July 2017!  We hope to continue this amazing program as we kick on the 2019 school year.  Every dollar helps!  Your compassion and support is greatly appreciated.  Please feel free to spread the word about our project.  "Asante sana!" – Thank you very much!
