Prevent the spread of Fracking - With your help, we can prevent the Oil and Gas industry using a 'Trojan Horse' to weaken planning controls to drive fracking right across the UK. We need your support now.
How can you help? This appeal for your support is to help us make a strong case during the ‘Examination in Public’ stage in the adoption of an updated Mineral and Waste Plan dealing with hydrocarbon extraction. We need to engage expert planning consultants to counter the might of the Oil and Gas industry. Every £ contributed will make a difference in stopping the development of fracking in the UK and the recognised adverse impact on our health and environment.
What's the background? Every 20 years, local councils have to write new Minerals & Waste Plans for their area. After a series of consultations over the past 4 years, North Yorkshire County Council, City of York Council and the North York Moors National Park Authority have finalised their Joint Minerals and Waste Plan, published in November.
Naturally we do not want Fracking at any price. However, this is our last opportunity to limit the impacts of fracking on local residents and the industrialization of our countryside.
Following its publication in November, the Plan will then be reviewed by a Government Planning Inspector during an ‘Examination in Public’ in early 2018. The Oil and Gas Companies will throw every resource at the Examination in Public in order to loosen the planning regulations to allow fracking just about anywhere!
Our objective is to ensure the plan provides adequate yet robust protections to our existing communities and businesses from the recognised adverse and cumulative effects of this industrial development. For example, the industry wants to use a definition of fracking, which would mean fewer fracks are classified as fracks. The industry’s preferred definition of a frack is one using more than 1000m³ of water.
The benefit to the Oil and Gas Industry is a reduction in the need to apply for planning permission for more than an estimated 50% of wells. We, however, consider that ‘a frack is a frack’. The impacts on local residents, businesses, the environment and the landscape are significant, irrespective of any arbitrary volume.
Once the inspector finally approves the plan, it
will form a blueprint for other planning authorities across the UK as it will be the first such plan to go through this process since fracking came to the UK. Once this plan is approved, it will be in place for the next 20 years, so your help and support is needed right now.

Funds – how they will be dealt with Caroline Davis is the volunteer campaign manager for this appeal. The campaign manager will withdraw and transfer 100% of the funds by BACS to Frack Free Ryedale (after the GoFundMe fees have been deducted). Using the funds raised, Frack Free Ryedale will pay the invoices of the Planning Consultants & experts engaged to prepare the case on behalf of concerned residents for the Examination in Public. In the unlikely event that any monies raised exceed the amount needed for the Minerals and Waste Joint Plan Examination in Public, the funds will be used by Frack Free Ryedale for further campaigning. The campaign will end when we either a). reach the target or b). reach the date of the Examination in Public, expected to be Feb-Mar 2018 (date to be set), at which point the appeal will be closed.
