My name is Paul Duurloo and I am raising money for my wife Becca. My wife turned 40 in July and as part of her annual checkup received her first mammogram. About a week later, we got an unexpected call alerting us that an 'anomaly' was detected and further testing was needed. She has since received an additional mammogram, an ultrasound, and a biopsy. Then a few days ago, we got the news we were dreading...cancer. To be more specific, she has been diagnosed with Stage 2B Invasive Ductal Carcinoma in her right breast.

 

To say we weren't prepared for this news is an understatement. She is only 40, doesn't drink, doesn't smoke, has no family history, and she breastfed our children. She also had no symptoms. The tumor is currently 3cm in diameter and has spread to her lymph nodes. Currently, we know she will need chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery over the next several months. We are still processing this news and trying to determine if a lumpectomy or a mastectomy is the better option. She will also need further testing including a possible PET scan to see if the cancer has spread to other areas of her body. As of now, we plan on having her treated in Tampa, FL at the Moffit Cancer Center &amp; Research Institute and have an appointment with her Oncologist this Thursday. We want to get the best treatment possible to kick this disease's butt.

 

A little backstory on my wife Becca. We are high school sweethearts who have been together since we were 15 &amp; 16 years old. We have been married for almost 19 years and have 3 children (Alyssa 19, Nathan 13, and Michael 10). This news has hit our family very hard. Becca is a Registered Nurse. She has been at the same hospital since she graduated college almost 20 years ago. She has dedicated her life to helping others. She is honestly my hero. She never complains, even in the last year with all of the craziness in this world. All she cares about is her patients and their health and happiness.

 

We have never had to ask anyone for financial help in our lives, and have been very proud of that fact. However, I think this situation is going to be too much to bear for us. We are going to need help, and although its hard to ask for, we are reaching out to our family, friends, and even strangers to help us in the most difficult time of our lives.
