Electric wheelchair for Oliver

Donation protected
Oliver is a 33 year old man who had brain damage at birth and has been visually impaired with loss of visual field all of his life. He enjoyed going out with friends, studying part time, volunteering, taking an interest in politics etc.

For the last 5 years Oliver has been in a wheelchair and not able to stand or walk at all due to a disc collapsing on his cervical spinal cord. Prior to that he was able to walk etc.

This in itself has been a massive change for Oliver and his family. It's been a very sad and isolating time for Oliver especially.

The wheelchair service has only provided Oliver with manual wheelchairs ... wheelchairs which need to be physically pushed by mum and sister (as agencies won't let their staff push due to health and safety). Oliver is 6ft4 and of large build and this continues to damage the health of his carers. The various manual wheelchairs that have been provided have not provided enough support for Olivers posture, they've not had shock absorbtion, etc. A few years ago social services provided a powerpack ('as a gesture of good will') on the recommendation of the wheelchair service assuring Oliver that this would be the same as a powerchair. This was not the case. The chair and powerpack and the chairs without the powerpack continually breakdown which is very scary and dangerous and we dread to think of the impact this is having on Olivers health. We're now back to having to use the chair without a powerpack but still the chair breaksdown on a fortnightly basis at minimum and we're currently awaiting parts for various repairs. All of this waiting in means that Oliver is stuck indoors, the agency carers can only provide a 'sitting with service'. Oliver is 33 years old and wants to go out and experience life.

We have repeatedly asked for an electric wheelchair for Oliver. However because Oliver is visually impaired the wheelchair service have said that they are unable to provide him with any sort of electric wheelchair which they would otherwise have provided if he'd met the DVLA eyesight test.

What Oliver needs is an Otto Bock B400 electric wheelchair (which he trialed at the wheelchair service and they had said he'd be provided with if he passed the eyesight test) which has an additional attendant controller. The wheelchair service have supported the need for this however they say they are unable to provide it because of their comissioning criteria (which varies accross the country).

So, we are looking to fundraise for an Otto Bock B400 electric wheelchair. We have obtained a quote for £3962. This covers the cost of the Otto Bock B400 base, contour seating, attendant controller, puncture proof tyres, headrest, electric tilt, maintenance plan and 1 year insurance.

The prices do go up a bit we've been told in April however the amount we're looking to raise is £3962.

We are approaching charities, etc too so hopefully this will bring the amount that we need to raise here down.

If we raise more than the money needed we will put some towards a repairs / modification fund for the wheelchair.

If by some miracle (after 5 years) Oliver is provided with an electric wheelchair via the NHS the money raised here will be donated to charity (probably our local mencap for their politics group).

So, we hate doing this, but if you can then please do donate and help us raise enough money to buy Oliver an electric wheelchair. It would enable him to get out and about more,  see his friends, make new ones, volunteer, go to the park, study more, etc.

Thank you so much
Oliver and family
