Chinock lived and worked in Cancun, Mexico. Three months ago he broke his neck diving off of the tour boat where he works, sustaining a C-5/6 spinal cord injury.
He is completely paralyzed from the shoulders down. His spine has been fused together with metal rods, but he has had no post-injury treatment or rehabilitation. Since going home from the emergency hospital he has caught pneumonia, and had a urinary tract infection that sent him back to the hospital. While laying on a gurney in the emergency room for 2 days, for a bed to become available he developed two large pressure sores on his tailbone. He is still hospitalized while his wounds heal.
The standard of care practiced in Mexico’s public hospitals threatens to make his condition significantly worse.
He has been seen by a physical therapist several times in his 4th story apartment, but he needs a formal, inpatient rehabilitation program to learn the skills to function with his new disability and properly take care of himself.
This need is urgent. Chinock must get to a hospital with staff that is experienced in spinal cord injury and has the capacity to provide appropriate physical and occupational therapy.
Your donations will enable Chinock to be treated in one of Mexico’s two rehabilitation hospitals, help support his wife and family while she and he are away from home, purchase him an appropriate wheelchair; and pay relocation expenses related to moving them into a wheelchair accessible apartment after discharge from the hospital.
We also need someone fluent in spanish and english with a medical background to aid in translation and communication with hospital staff. An understanding of how Mexico’s health care system operates would be an enormous help as well.
The urgency of this need cannot be overstated. With appropriate care and treatment Chinock will live a long, full, and rewarding life. Without it, he will be dead in less than 5-years.
