What is Plaza 618?
Plaza 618 will serve as a centrally located facility in our Historic Downtown, helping to accelerate our growing Main Street. The Plaza will feature areas to sit, relax, dine, enjoy events and entertainment, and interact. The fountain, tables, benches, umbrellas, live performance area, and a vibrant landscape are just a few of the amenities the Plaza will provide. With the rapid increase and demand for outside dining in our downtown, several Downtown La Porte and surrounding restaurants will offer delivery service to tables in the Plaza.
How did Plaza 618 come to be?
Plaza 618 was conceived through the formation of a task force composed of City of La Porte employees, Downtown La Porte Main Street Association members, Business Improvement District representatives, Redevelopment Commission members, and community stakeholders. A location was identified by the task force and the Redevelopment Commission initiated the project by purchasing the condemed building at 618 Lincolnway, which sits in a highly visible and prime location within our downtown. The La Porte Urban Enterprise Association quickly followed with a sizable contribution to assist with the demolition and initial construction of the plaza. Once the building was approved for removal, Indiana University Health La Porte Hospital gave a very generous donation in support of the plaza project. Fundraising for the plaza is currently underway with donations coming in daily in support of this project!
How can you help?
Several corporate sponsors have already contributed funds to help realize the Plaza 618 completion, but because of the grand scale of this project we also need help from the community. You can be a part of history by sponsoring the materials and amenities that will help realize La Porte's first and only public plaza. Your contribution not only assists the Plaza completion, but also helps in the overall transformation of Downtown La Porte. This is just the first step in several initiatives coming to La Porte to help enrich and enliven our Historic Downtown!
