Beira Mozambique Orphanage Recovery

Who am I?
For those of you who don’t know me—I am Lola Gimbel-Sherr. I live in Seattle and also in Beira, Mozambique. I come every year for three months with my family because my parents work with the government of Mozambique to strengthen health services.

This is the second year I have been working at this orphanage, playing with children, holding babies, and giving and getting a lot of love.  I have volunteered over 70 hours with this organization over the past two years.

Who are we helping?
This project will help the children at Infantario Provincial. This is a state run organization in Beira, Mozambique where children can receive food, shelter, and love while their families are unable to provide care.  Sometimes the kids are brought here by police after they have been abandoned or by family members when their mother has died or they are having a crisis and no one can care for them. Most children stay a few days, or a few weeks until their family has made a plan and they can go back home. Sometimes the kids will stay and be adopted. Also, it has special services for kids who are blind or have developmental challenges. This organization began in 1975, serves more than 180 kids a year and is staffed by child care workers from the state and from a local organization, Boa Vontade.  In a typical night there are 50-60 children sleeping there.

Right now they do not have a playground but they have a large open dusty area.

From an interview with the Director of the organization, I found that they would very much like a playground for the children. This playground needs to be strong and made of good materials. It needs to meet the needs of the kids who come to the orphanage who sometimes need extra help.

Why should you help?
Having a playground for children has the following benefits:
-Helps kids adjust not being with family members
-Help children bond with other kids and adults
        -Provides entertainment for the kids
        -Helps give the kids exercise
        -Keeps kids creative
        -Improves communication

The playground equipment will cost $2,500, and includes all the materials and the labor to build it. It will have a slide, swings and a climbing wall. The people who work there love the children and are working hard to make the children’s lives better.

By giving money you are helping over 180 kids a year! Please join me in supporting this wonderful organization!

I will be working throughout the year to fundraise as well so we will work together to make this happen!
