Phil's medical fund

On the evening of November 6, 2017, Phil was struck while on a bicycle at an intersection near his home in Gainesville, Florida. He sustained a skull fracture (with bleeding into the brain), and multiple other injuries requiring surgeries to decompress his brain and to stabilize his right tibia (lower leg). When he regained consciousness, he was unable to speak.  Thankfully, he survived both surgeries, and soon began the arduous journey of rehabilitation to include physical, occupational, and speech therapy.  Many of us have been riveted and encouraged by Phil’s miraculous journey in healing.

Phil is now finally home, living on his own in Gainesville, and assisted by friends and neighbors.  Though Phil's health and physical abilities have made great strides since his inpatient days, he is still plagued with a mostly non-weightbearing right leg and a right shoulder rotator cuff injury.  He remains mostly wheelchair bound, unable to drive, and is looking to sell his vehicles.  He depends on friends and public transportation to make doctors' appointments and trips to rehab and aqua therapy.  There are days when he is unable to leave the house due to lack of transportation.  Though he is immensely grateful for the love and support he has received thus far, there are times when the frustration of being dependent on others wears him down.

When I gently reminded him of starting this Gofundme page to help with medical expenses and transportation (something we discussed while he was still in inpatient rehab), he became still and whispered, "I am not poor".   "Not the point," I said, "you've got friends who love and honor you, and who have been waiting to connect with you in a tangible way".  I explained that not all of us can afford to take time off to come see him, but we could all chip in a little to help make his way a bit easier--so that he could concentrate on healing, and not be so distracted with the daily matters of survival.

The amount of $15,000 would (hopefully) cover his out of pocket expenses from hospitalization and rehab as well as transportation needs (bus, Uber/Lyft rides) until he can drive again.  Additionally, the sale of his vehicles will hopefully mitigate his lack of income stream at this time.

One thing is sure: Phil faces a long and difficult path to recovery, and despite his set backs, he continues to draw strength from the love, encouragement and support he has received. On behalf of Phil and his family, thank you for staying tuned and for manifesting your good wishes and prayers into the form of financial assistance.

Namaste,
