WALKING FOR WATER. To help raise the additional funds needed to complete a drinking water pipeline to the village of Tinaogan: Peter with some of the Samar evacuees - climbing Mount Pinatubo, Philippines, on Saturday 1st February - Peter's Sister, Nicola, in Florida/USA walked a marathon distance - starting on Super Bowl Sunday, Sunday 2 February and some family and friends of Peter walked approximately 25km of the North Downs Way from Box Hill to Guildford on Sunday 16 February 2014.

Headline: The devastation in Tinaogan (and adjoining Barangays) is hard to describe and I invite all to view the pictures posted on Face Book. Shelter has been assembled from the remains and families are sharing as best they can – but this is a community in shock and crisis – fighting for survival.
The events in the Philippines, following Super Typhoon Yolanda (International code name Haiyan), are now widely known through the media – although the true reality in terms of death and destruction continues to rise. Many of the smaller towns and villages in Samar and Leyte were not visited for more than 10 days and have therefore only recently been receiving organised support.
The larger international agencies and organisations are now in gear, but have naturally concentrated on restoring law and order, rebuilding infrastructure and critical medical needs. I therefore elected to aim my help at a small community - where we can make a real difference.
Our target for support is a small remote fishing village 'Tinaogan' - which is close to the San Juanico bridge in southern Samar. This village is pretty much opposite Tacloban City Leyte, which has received the main media coverage.
Initial reports indicated that the village of Tinaogan had been 95% destroyed, had no water, electric, shelter or communications. The report came from a family member that walked 15Km to get word out from a police command centre. Their immediate requested needs were water, food, shelter, clothes and assistance with the dead, injured and for medicine.
On 14 November, a small team departed to Samar with emergency supplies - to assess the situation and to evacuate by hired transport, and then accommodate, those most in need. The plan then was, at a later stage, to assist the village to rebuild and regenerate their small fishing business on which they rely. The team, of Prudencio Abello, supported by 2 sons returned to Angeles City on 21 November and updates were placed on FaceBook.
They reported that the Barangay Captain was coordinating activities – with all members of the village helping each other to rebuild basic shelter from what remains. The immediate key shortages are medicines and first aid – clothes – sanitary items. The church – school – basketball covered area and stores, are all badly damaged.
I arrived in the Philippines on 20 November and set up an office and collection centre. Following receipt of additional aid items – myself and a small team departed for Tinaogan on 25 November.

Having completed detailed discussions with the Barangay Captain and some Municipal officials - we left one team member to assist rebuilding houses and I returned to Angeles City – with evacuees (4 now have work).
As flights to Tacloban could not be guaranteed - we sent 2 team members by bus (arrived 13 Dec) to deliver further essential medicines - clothes - computer equipment - solar powered lanterns etc. They spent the week actively involved with various assistance and returned to Angeles City on 24 December (see updated pictures on Face Book). Both house builds are going well - Church roof has temporary covering,... but this needs urgent improvement - Water well in village area just about coping, but main water pipe is some half a mile away.
Peter and some evacuees visited Tinaogan 4-15 February to assist with the house build projects and fully analyse the options for completing the drinking water requirements of the Barangay. Updates posted on Face Book. Peter will need to return to UK for a while - departing Pampanga 18 February - but will continue the campaign from UK and return to the Philippines when practical to do so.
