Please Help Peter Dykstra Put His Life Back Together
A world-class environmental journalist, mentor to hundreds of young reporters, maker of awesome meatballs in tomato sauce and a life-long Red Sox fan, Peter is now facing an extremely tough challenge. A little over two months ago, Peter was attacked by a deadly bacterial infection. The MRSSA infection settled on his spine. He lost feeling in his legs – and within hours of going to the doctor he was transported from a regional hospital to a major medical center in downtown Atlanta. The next day he underwent emergency surgery. The infection wrapped itself around – and began to destroy – several vertebra. Peter is now paralyzed from the chest down.
Since the opening crisis, Peter has had a second surgery, this time to remove more infected tissue and to place rods in his back to stabilize his spine. He is now recovering at the Shepherd Center – a hospital dedicated to working with spinal injury patients.
Peter is confined to bed or a motorized wheelchair. He needs 24/7 assistance now and for the foreseeable future. To say this turn of events is life-changing is an understatement.
For those of you who know him, though, you will be pleased to note that his head, his heart and his spirit remain unbroken. He is anxious to work, to keep reporting, and to keep informing the public about his beat. His passion for the job remains intact.
The financial impact of this illness is huge. Peter is starting over at 60. Contributions will go towards finding and sorting out new living quarters, to pay for necessary medical equipment, to pay uncovered medical expenses, for transportation, and to pay for all of the things he cannot imagine now, but are sure to come up. If you can, please help him get back to work. He needs our help, we need his voice.
