St. Rita's Pet Ambulance

Donation protected
St. Rita’s Kennel for rescue dogs urgently needs a pet ambulance to pick up abandoned and sick dogs off the streets of Abadiania Brazil. Vivian Mauro, owner/operator, currently does the best she can with a 1995 VW Golf. It was bought ‘used’ and is in a sad state of repair. The hatchback is not doggie-friendly ̶ totally unsuitable for her needs!

A pet ambulance for the kennel must be a van big enough to hold dog crates so that Vivian can safely transport several dogs at the same time. It must also be roomy enough for passengers, food and supplies for the kennels. She drives to veterinarians in neighbouring cities for medical care, including neutering. Emergencies require many late nights at the kennel and vet offices so she must have a vehicle that is safe and reliable!

Vivian has been rescuing dogs in Abadiania since 2014. She is a former tour guide at the Casa Dom Ignacio where hundreds of thousands people stream to John of God for healing. Many of the dogs she helps are ‘Casa dogs’. Relying totally on donations, she’s built the St. Rita’s Kennel near the Casa. St. Rita of Cascia – the Saint of Impossibilities -- is the kennel’s patron saint, and has been one of John of God’s lifelong spiritual guides.

Most of the people in the agricultural community do not value their dogs or understand that they are beautiful creatures with feelings. Dogs are abandoned and wander the streets without food or homes. They suffer and die from tick disease, distemper, and transmissible cancer (although many diseases are treatable with vaccines).

Vivian operates the kennel with passion but with few helping hands. She works day and night finding homes for these dogs, and houses many dogs in her own home. Her adopt-and-fly program lets visitors return to Europe, the Netherlands, America, and Canada with these dogs as treasured pets. To date she has flown 18 dogs and a cat out of Brazil.

One of her priorities is visiting schools to educate children on how to care for their pets. She is unrelenting in working with City Hall and the Department of Education to raise awareness and to foster compassion at the local level. Her motto is “awareness is the mother of transformation”.
