Dear Friends and Family of Perry Hill Farm,

My Mother, Harriet, and I would like to extend out deepest gratitude for the outpouring of support everyone has shown us. I have no words to describe what we are feeling- our life as we have known it has come to a horrific and sudden halt.

On the morning of Thursday, September 6, 2012, our farm in Bedford, NH burned to the ground. We lost 14 horses and three cats. Due in large part to the overwhelmingly heroic efforts of some of our neighbors, we were able to save eight ponies, two goats, our pet pig, and seven barn cats. With the exception of a few halters and leads, almost 25 years worth of accumulation of equipment and memories were also lost. We are, however, comforted by the fact that the animals lost died from smoke inhalation and did not suffer. They all led full and happy lives filled with purpose and good care to the bitter end. Many, including current and former students, have asked about the identity of the horses that perished. For those that would like to know, I have included a list of the horses lost, most of which were older American Saddlebreds who had many who loved them before even coming to us. The surviving animals were checked over by our veterinarian and appear to be in good health, although understandably, very confused. They will at least temporarily be housed by family friends. As the shock wears off, and the grief begins to soften, we will start to move forward.

Although we understand  insurance is likely to be inadequate to rebuild, our current goal is to ensure the continued care and safety for the surviving animals. We are overwhelmed by the good deeds of so many and are humbled by the establishment of a fund established at TD Bank under the name of "Perry Hill Farm Fire Fund." With the loss of our income, any donations will help greatly in caring for the surviving animals. It is the little moments when we go to grab a pitchfork or a brush that are the hardest, but with the outpouring of help, step by step we will move on.

Sincerely,

Harriet and Elissa Finks
