Peggy O'Gorman Leadership Award

It has often been said that the greatest gift that one can give is to make a difference in someone else’s life.  Peggy O’Gorman was a person who made that difference for so many of us in NHS’ Class of ‘82, leaving everyone she knew with indelible memories of love, laughter and smiles.  Sadly, we lost Peggy in August 2016.  Her leadership and service were often at the heart of what made the Class of 1982 special and distinct, but her boundless sense of hope, sparkling smile, and infectious sense of optimism spread throughout the school and far beyond its campus.

As Vice President of our Class, Peggy’s sense of spirit was evident in all that we did, whether it was the founding of the Nyack Senior Citizen Thanksgiving Community Dinner, the renovation of the McCallman Field press box and bleachers, or the making of our Senior Prom affordable to everyone in our Class.  We could not have achieved what we did were it not for Peggy’s leadership, friendship and love of her classmates.

Shortly after graduating from Nyack High School, Peggy's spirit and eternal optimism was challenged with what would become a long-term battle with mental illness.  These were tough years for Peggy as the illness robbed her of the opportunities that were ahead of her to spread her love and kindness to others.  She struggled, but she always maintained her inner light during this time.  In the end, it was cancer that finally pulled her away from family and friends.

We are asking you to join us in celebrating and honoring Peggy by establishing an annual scholarship in her name through Rockland Community Foundation. The Peggy O’Gorman Class of 1982 Scholarship will be awarded each year to a Nyack High School graduating senior who exemplifies the attributes of leadership, service, scholarship and community.  With this scholarship, the halls of Nyack High School will forever be fueled by Peggy’s leadership and blessed with her joyful spirit.
