God's Little Sister Needs Your Help

Our Dear Pat Reilly has suffered a severe stroke this past Father's Day Weekend on 6-16-17.  Mom is 78 years young and was completely independent until that Friday afternoon. Now she needs constant 24-hour care! It was shocking for Mom, needless to say, and has been completely overwhelming for the four of us kids!

The event was particularly tragic because Mom had just had a long awaited operation to repair her bladder and had only 1 day on top of the world, or as she joked, the Queen of her new Throne. (While Pat was in surgery, Rich & Tim had installed for her a brand new toilet at her Beloved Esplanade apartment.)

The biggest mishap occurred upon Mom's release from Kaiser after the successful operation; The staff gave her no discharge instructions, no warnings about pain and NO connections were made between the after effects of her surgery and her ongoing A-fib heart condition! The nurses said "Nice to meet you!" and that was it! Rodger took her home one day after the surgery and Richard spoke with her the next morning, and by 11:30 am on Friday, 6-16, Mom had a bad headache and went to take a nap; instead of knowing to call for help.

She lay there for 7 hours until she was found and rushed to emergency. Tragically because no one had visually seen her for over 4 hours, the stroke medicine was not allowed to be given to her. We could only watch as the stroke did its damage!

Mom's stroke occurred in her right brain, affecting her entire left side. Kaiser kept her waiting in emergency for 15 hours where she progressively got worse! That's how Kaiser works; it was out of our hands.  After 5 days there, they made her leave and transported her to Hale Nani Rehab Center on Pensacola, where she is currently.

Luckily, Pat has a great spirit, and can talk and think just about as good as any 78-year-old Great Grandmother! We have not left her side, coaching her to relearn everything, including how to swallow; which she just mastered yesterday! 3 weeks of non-stop therapy.

And here is our O'hana's Dilemma. Life will never be the same for any of us. Most urgently is concerning all of her costs and bills. Kaiser will only allow Mom to stay in Hale Nani if she makes progress every 2 days. Otherwise, they can kick her out at any time! That is why I  am with her every morning, all day long, and Rodger every afternoon and now Richard all evening to ensure that Mom does not fail! So far, she is working every day at physical therapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy, and must comply with full participation. You should see her all decked out in her workout outfit, copper socks, Evelyn's pull-on tennis shoes and knee braces!

Regardless, she has 100 days through Kaiser for $2,100 and then if her Medicaid application is not accepted, then the cost for Mom can be $400 per day!!! That's $12,000 a month and $144,000 for only one year of care!

That's just insane! Evelyn and Mariliz have kept her bills afloat temporarily, but in no way is that sustainable, sadly. So, of course, we will look into every accept of this process, including modifying our family homes to accommodate Mom, but we are running out of time, and need your help, for a Lady who has helped others her entire life!

Any little bit of help will be gifted to Mom in aiding her in her rapid recovery! My 'One Word' for the Year 2017 was HOPEfull... And   We are all FULL Of Hope!
