We are here to support Jay Sein, his wife Pam and their 12 year-old daughter Maya while they relocate and begin the necessary treatments for Jay’s recent cancer diagnosis.
On November 27th, Jay collapsed, was rushed to the hospital, and received emergency open heart surgery. When his chest was opened it was discovered that there was cancer his heart. Jay barely survived the surgery. He has since stabilized, but remains in critical condition.
Jay has been diagnosed with cardiac angiosarcoma, an exceedingly rare cancer with an incidence of 0.00001%.
Very few physicians have experience with this type of cancer and Jay is so fortunate to have been accepted by an expert in Proton radiation therapy treatment in Boston. With Pam by his side, he was transported successfully via life flight from Florida to the ICU at Mass General Hospital on December 3rd.
With this rare form of cancer, no treatment protocols exist. However, there have been very promising outcomes with this specialized type of Proton radiation therapy. It is palliative and has been successful prolonging life, but sadly is not curative. They are hoping for a miracle, but holding onto realistic hope for an extension of some good quality of life
This treatment will be "out of network" for their insurance and will also require them to stay in Boston. The anticipated medical expenses and costs of temporarily relocating to Boston are significant and will be a heavy burden on the family. Neither Pam nor Jay have asked for any financial help, but we know that they will need it. We want them to focus on Jay’s heath, not finances.
