Hola Familia!
Echale Books is hosting the Pachanga de Palabras: A Westside Book Festival in the historic Plaza de Guadalupe in the heart of the Westside. There will be poets, book and zine vendors (self published books), free workshops/activities for folks of all ages, and live music. We are excited to be able to fill this public space with books and especially unapologetic Spanish bilingual literature. It is important to the organizers of the festival to promote literacy and especially bilingual literary in the Westside of San Antonio.
Historically, the Westside was one of areas of town whose populations were kept from many resources including quality education. Most Westsiders remember or have relatives who remember when Spanish was criminalized and when children were punished for speaking that language. In many ways, not much has changed. While the Pachanga de Palabras is hosted in the Westside for cultural, political, and personal reasons everyone in San Antonio and beyond are invited to celebrate the love of words and stories whether written or passed down through generations.
However Gente, we need your help to make this event possible! Through our partnership with the COSA Center City Development and Operations Department and the Avenida Guadalupe Association the cost of the venue is accounted for but we need help raising the rest of the money. This online fundraiser is only part one of our fundraising plan. Stay tuned for in person fundraisers.
We will publish a complete account of how we spent the money in order to remain accountable to you, our community.

About the Organizers
I am Gianna Rendon and I'm the founder of Echale Books, a traveling book business. For over 2 years, Echale Books has been bringing affordable books to the Westside and other underserved areas of San Antonio. We specialize in Chicanx/Latinx books, bilingual books, libros en Espanol, LGBTQ books, feminist books and other politically progressive books. I am born and raised on the Westside of San Antonio and have always been sad that we don't have a bookstore. 1 in 4 people in San Antonio are illiterate in any language (half of that statistic is functionally illiterate). I have experience with how illiteracy affects families and wanted to do my part to change that statistic.
Eliza Perez grew up in Pharr, Texas a small city in El Valle del Río Grande. As a child she was fascinated by stories about the galaxy, Ancient Egypt, and folktales. From her tiny elementary school library to indie book stores with cats in Philadelphia, some of her favorite places have always been libraries and bookstores. In her free time, Eliza loves baking vegan goodies, visiting used bookstores, and spending time with her friends.
Please help us bring books to our community!
Con Mucho Amor,
Gianna Rendon y Eliza Perez
