7 years ago Pura Buena Onda - Conversational Spanish, was started on a whim. I was trying to make a career change, had no idea what I wanted to do, so I thought I would teach Spanish for a few months while I figured it out. I soon figured out that what students really needed was to practice their conversation skills rather than memorizing vocabulary & grammar rules. And thus PBO was born.
I started with one class out of our home and am happy to say that we now offer 18 classes out of a beautiful, comfortable, well-located office in North Park :)
So why do we need money?
Well, it's time for PBO to grow. We're in one room right now and need a 2nd room to be able to offer more evening classes. We figure the rent & teacher's pay will be covered by the classes we offer, but the start up costs to get a new office going are quite high. We're talking flooring, paint, lighting, window coverings, furniture, classroom supplies like whiteboards, pens, etc. It's quite a long and expensive list.
PBO has always been a lifestyle business, not a very profitable one. I do it because I'm extremely passionate about this little community we have built and can't imagine doing anything else at this point. And since it's time for PBO to take that next step (and our profit margin is just enough to live off) I started racking my brain trying to figure out how to make this happen. I feel like a total sinvergüenza (a Spanish word that refers to someone that has no shame) for even considering this option, but I guess when you want something bad enough...
Anyway, thank you so much for taking the time to read about us :) Any donation, no matter what size will get us closer to our goal (and by the way, I'm not delusional...I totally get that raising the full amount is very unlikely, but anything will help)!
