Our one-woman show will be discussing issues that relate to the "escaped youth" of the born-free generation (post- apartheid generation) in South Africa. As South Africa is celebrating Youth Day on June, 16 2014, we are aiming to align our play with the educational curriculum by developing the script in such a way that students from high schools and universities can engage with the material in some of their courses. The project will use minimalism according to Grotowski's "Poor Theatre" so as to allow for it to be challenging, thought provoking, and interactive for the targeted high school students and their educators alike.
This project, for us, is more than a staged show. It is a social project that is aimed at introducing theatre as a didactic tool for different learning areas both to the students and their educators. We plan to make the show accessible and have thus decided to make the entrance free for everyone. Hence, the money accumulated from the donations will be used to cover the various expenses of the play which we cannot make up in ticket profit as there will be none.
It is 38-years ago, when the black youth of South Africa marched the streets of Soweto in an attempt to overthrow the demeaning system of Apartheid and it's poor Bantu education to reclaim their intergrity. 1994 signifies the birth of democracy in South Africa and with it, the born-free generation. It has often been said that the "the purpose of the Apartheid generation was to attain freedom" and with the death of Nelson Mandela, a father to the nation, born-frees are faced with the challenge of discovering theirs. By supporting this project that we are passionate about, not only will you be helping us spark a conversation amongst this youth, but you will also be helping us bring the youth of South Africa closer to realizing their purpose.
