Story:
It all started when I was invited to share a doorway with a group of homeless women and men.  They gave me shelter from the rain in a moment of compassion.  While we stood shoulder to shoulder with our backs to the wind I learned they were protecting an injured elderly man sitting on a bucket in the corner. He had two black eyes and a split lip.

The man, a Navy veteran had been assaulted and robbed of his rain poncho, back pack and a MSS he recieved from the Veterans Administration.    I listened to the group discuss helping him into a warming shelter.  They were in that particular doorway because it was close to a dry area under an elevated sidewalk. If the warming shelter didn't have enough staff to open they needed to beet the crowd to the underground spot.  They were all soaked but were counting up blankets and sleeping bags to share with this man.

Feeling I could help I asked the old man huddled in the corner "Is there anything you need?"  He replied "can you get my friend a raincoat "  he motioned to a lady in her late fifties in a cheap nylon windbreaker.  It covered a dirty quilted flannel and a cotton hoody.  She looked soaked to the skin.  The lady shrugged her shoulders and said "zippers broke"

I was shattered by the generosity I was witnessing. They offerd ME shelter, what little they had they were giving to an elderly Veteran, and he, broken and cold asked for a blessing for his friend.

I stood there and wept.

I knelt down to the man.  "Is there anything you need"  this time he replied "Can you get me another waterproof sleeping bag?"

A Simple question "Is there anything you need"?  A humble answer "a raincoat for a friend and a waterproof sleeping bag"

This is an immediate need in our community.  Weather conditions are forecast to worsen and winter is expected to be long.  Please act now.
