Mr. Oogie Boogie Man's Surgery

While my dachshund Oogie and I were road tripping across the country, getting all the states marked off our list, he was hit by a car in Portland, Maine. Not knowing the area or where a vet was, I was a little scared as he was losing a good amount of blood. Luckily, there was a kind couple who stopped and took us to a 24-hour clinic in the area.

Oog's front right leg was beyond repair and needed to be amputated. Oogie saved my life (emotionally and truly perhaps more) after I returned from Iraq and has never quit on me in the 12 years we have been a team. There was no way I was going to quit on him, no matter what the bill was. The estimate was between $6,500 - $8,000. I don’t have anything near those kinds of funds, however, I qualified for Care Credit ($5,5000) which allowed us to move forward with the operation. Care Credit is a wonderful program that allows me to pay the money back over 6 months without acquiring interest, after which, a hefty interest rate is applied.

The operation went smoothly and now he is Triforce Oogie!

All the doctors and staff members have been wonderful to us, allowing me to sleep on the floor holding Oogie a couple of times. Other nights, I have slept in my truck outside the clinic, walking in to see him at various times throughout the day/night.

We are looking forward to getting back on the road and returning home to Memphis. Oogie wanted to continue the journey to all the states, but I said he needed to be home to rest and recover. As fate would have it, the trip home will take us through states 48 and 49, so he kind of gets his way, which is usual.
