One In A Million: Thérèse Hak-Kuhn

Last December, Thérèse Hak-Kuhn was diagnosed with an incredibly rare form of cancer with a high recurrence rate that affects fewer than one in a million people. She is literally one in a million.
Several months later, after surgery and after beginning radiation treatments, she is on a path towards healing and wellness. The extensive traditional treatments and complementary healing modalities are working, but they are expensive and time consuming, and they need to continue in order for her to remain healthy.
Thérèse has empowered generations of families through her work as a doula, educator, midwife’s assistant, advocate, and activist. She has given thousands of people the strength and support they needed at the times they needed it most. She is a mother, a partner, a sister, a friend, and a mentor.
Now, she needs our help.
Together, we have the ability to give Thérèse comfort, strength, support, and time, gifts she has given to so many of us. We need her to be healthy and strong so she can get back to the life-changing work of helping, teaching, and empowering families and doulas all over the world.
Her family needs her. Her friends need her. Her community needs her.
All funds raised here by One in a Million RVA will go directly to fund Thérèse’s treatments, medicines, and supplements, as well as to replace lost wages during this time that must be focused 100% on healing. Because Thérèse is a sole proprieter of toLabor, a small business that has enriched thousands of lives across the country, she has no medical leave, short-term disability, company-subsidized insurance, or paid leave. Because her cancer is so rare, she needs supplementary treamtments not covered by the insurance she does have.
We know many people will want to flood Thérèse with love and support, but we ask that you respect her privacy and cocoon of healing and not try to contact her directly during this time via phone, text, or email.
