Rhys' Battle Against Wilms Tumor!

Donation protected

At age 3, I survived Stage IV Neuroblastoma (childhood cancer).  As a result of the treatments, I was eventually unable to have biological children.  So, we adopted.  Our first son, Chance, was born 11/22/11.  We were blessed with our second son, Rhys, on 05/15/13.  Both were happy, healthy babies.  At Rhys' one year well child check, on 06/02/14, the doctor felt a mass in his abdomen and sent us for what turned out to be the start of numerous tests.  On 06/03/14, we were told that our little boy, unrelated genetically in any way to me, had Wilms Tumor, a type of childhood cancer closely related to the kind I had survived 33 years before.  His cancer has metasticized (spread) into his IVC leading to his heart, so it cannot be taken out right now.  He had surgery on 06/05/14 to place a port for use with chemotherapy.  He will undergo that treatment for 6 weeks, in hopes of shrinking the IVC extension, so the tumor can be removed sometime (hopefully) in mid-July.  He will then continue chemo and radiation for no less than a 28 week course.  We pray at the end, we'll hear the words we're waiting for "he's in remission."  But, we're not naive to what this battle entails, nor the challenges that face us in the next many months and years.

While we both work full time jobs, and our employers are certainly supportive of our plight, there may (likely will) come a point where we need time off that is unpaid, and we have a high deductible plan for insurance, so thousands to be paid there.  Many of the medications Rhys needs are either not covered by insurance, or still costs hundreds of dollars.  All said and done, we're facing an extremely complex emotional battle, but also a financial one.  We could use any help anyone is willing to give.  And, most importantly, your prayers.

Become Rhys' Warrior, and help him kick this cancer's butt!
