Olivia's Playground Barnstable

Donation protected
Three years ago St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Barnstable removed an old pressure treated wood playground set that was becoming hazardous to our parish families and Cape Cod visitors.

Play is crucial for mental and physical health for both children and adults. Providing places where children can come together and participate in collaborative play is vital to the development of key social skills that will be carried over into adulthood.

Our goal is to raise a minimum of $15,500.00 of the needed $23,655 to build a new playground at St. Mary’s Church.  The playground will be in memory of Olivia Brodt, one of our young, talented and much loved and missed Barnstable community members.

Olivia's playground will include play equipment, safety surfacing, and a memorial stone with Olivia’s story. In addition, funds are needed for the prep work and re-location of the sprinkler system.

Meet Olivia

Olivia Brodt was top of her graduating class at Barnstable High School and a sophomore at Babson College when she lost her battle with an untreatable diagnosis of Leptomeningeal Disease as a result of her earlier diagnosis of Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma in April 2016. After a year of grueling treatments, but beyond determined, Olivia returned to Babson College in January 2017. Her Oncologist confirmed a full recovery.

While at Barnstable High School, Olivia lead the Championship Volleyball Team, Varsity Swim Team, served as National Honor Society President, was a member of Art Honor Society, and served as a Student Council Officer, and Student Envoy. She studied dance and theater at Beth Walsh Dance Center for 15 years in addition to ballet at the Cape Conservatory for 6 years. She was a member of the Youth Ministry Board at Our Lady of Victory Church, as well as, a life guard for the Town of Barnstable. Olivia enjoyed interning at the Little Beach Gallery and Chalkboard Studios.

At Babson College Olivia was a Presidential Scholar, the CEO of Simba Slippers, on the Babson Volleyball Team, the Babson Dance Ensemble, and most recently Chi Omega Sorority Vice President.

In March 2017, Olivia was rushed to the hospital with a severe headache. Later that week, a terminal cancer diagnosis was confirmed. I met Olivia through the VNA Cape Cod Hospice program where I had the honor and privilege of being her Hospice Nurse. Throughout her care, Olivia never complained, accepted her fate and left this Earth with such grace and dignity.

Olivia was an inspiration!  She enjoyed being outdoors and being active! St Mary’s church is dedicating the playground in Olivia’s name in hopes it will give others the chance to get to know Olivia and to keep her bright, lighthearted and beautiful spirit alive.

On behalf of the Olivia’s Playground Committee, we thank you deeply for your generosity and support.
We hope you will come walk the beautiful gardens at St. Mary's and bring your children/grandchildren to play!
