Orphaned Oksana's Mouth Surgery

Her Need
Oksana is physically disabled and has a severely elongated jaw, together with other jaw abnormalities that cause her great pain and affect her quality of life. In order to get quality surgical care, Oksana has been brought to the US. The restorative care for Oksana is so invasive it will require three years to complete.
Thankfully, Dr. Jason Carlyon, DDS, has put together a team of surgeons and orthodontists in Austin, Texas, to remediate Oksana’s structural jaw issues and accompanying oral problems. The dentist shared that, “We have reviewed Oksana’s dental record in conjunction with an oral surgeon, and have determined that she will need extensive surgery in both jaws, complete orthodontics to manage tooth position during and after surgery, as well as numerous dental restorations after the orthodontics is completed.” These procedures are now underway.

Her Story
Oksana, who’s now 19 years old, grew up in an orphanage for severely handicapped children in a southern town in Ukraine called Tsyurupinsk. She is a very bright and creative young woman; however, because as a young child she was labeled as both physically and mentally handicapped, she did not receive an education. When she turned 17 the government relocated her to an old folks’ home in a different town. Despite the government’s label, she is a creative artist, loves sports, and is currently learning English so that she can better communicate with others.
