Who are we?

Beats, Rhymes and Life (BRL) is the first non-profit in the nation to bring therapy to diverse youth populations using Hip Hop culture as a catalyst for positive change. We are a 501(c)(3) community-based organization in Oakland, California that serves youth between the ages of 12-24 years old.

What do we do?

Our mission is to improve behavioral health and social outcomes among marginalized youth by using Hip Hop as a catalyst for positive change and development. BRL’s organizational goals are to:

1. Provide mental health promotion and prevention services to                at-risk/at-promise diverse youth populations;
2. Promote ‘whole health’ at the individual, community and            systemic levels;
3. Reduce stigma around seeking and receiving mental health          services;
4. Foster self-worth, dignity, healthy relationships and healing          communities; and
5. Equip young people with the skills to become health leaders        and change makers in their communities and beyond

What is the Academy Program?

Transitional Aged Youth (TAY) represent one of the most underserved groups in Alameda County even though they present some of the most disturbing health and social outcomes.

BRL believes that with the right support, our youth can live healthy, productive lives and have a tremendous impact on the whole health (behavioral, social and physical) status of younger youth. The Beats Rhymes and Life (BRL) Academy exists as a response to this belief.

The BRL Academy is an aftercare/career pipeline program for TAY—ages 18 to 24—living in Alameda County who have interests in the helping professions. The BRL Academy offers TAY a post high-school extended learning program where they engage in social work training, job readiness workshops and on-the-job experience. Interns are placed as peer counselors, supporting younger youth in the BRL Community of Care as part of their training in the helping professions.

Why they need your support.

For the youth participating in The BRL Academy traditional higher education is not accessible because of financial realities.

Each of these seven youth is in need of a $3,000 scholarship immediately to cover the cost of their participation in The BRL Academy this Summer semester. They will also each need a $6,000 scholarship to cover the cost of the remaining school year.

Without these scholarships our youth will not be able to realize their dream of pursuing a career in the helping professions.

We are asking the community to support the educational goals of these youth as they work towards becoming helping professionals and change-makers in their communities.

This scholarship will provide classroom and field instruction in a social work setting, and access to a Clinical Case Manager to help them manage their own emotional needs as they transition into adulthood.
