Shakespeare’s Othello is a war hero of African descent, who fights in the Venetian army and defeats the Turks. Similarly to Saint Domingue’s (now Haiti) Pablo Ali, who was largely recognized in Santo Domingo (now the Dominican Republic) after fighting alongside the Spanish for Haiti's freedom, the army that Othello is a part of is made up of people who are unlike him; they are light-skinned and more than likely, Catholic, while Othello is dark-skinned and Muslim. Nonetheless, he is accepted by the Venetian army, just as Ali is accepted into the Spanish army, and they both proceed to become venerable figures in a country that is not their own. However, Othello’s eventual demise is a result of racial frustration and consistent political manipulation that is parallel to the relations between Haiti and the Dominican Republic today. Our production of Othello will illustrate the destruction that can come upon the island of Hispaniola today if its two countries refuse to accept their differences and embrace their similarities.
By producing Shakespeare's OTHELLO, we want to show younger audience members that classical plays are still relevant in our world. Theatre should be accessible to everyone regardless of their financial state, and that is the chief reason why we share quality work at an affordable price - $20 per ticket. We also want to promote Latin culture in the theatre, which is why the cast of OTHELLO will be completely Hispanic. This will ensure the authenticity of the setting as well as encourage the use of Hispanic actors in roles that are not normally played by them.
