The Hugh Parker Soccer Complex is a City of Owosso park. The City mows and waters the fields. Nets, goals, grass seed, striping etc are all done by the YMCA & Owosso Soccer Club.
Opened in the in the 1980's, the park has served the needs of our community and has undergone waves of expansion as soccer has grown in Owosso. In order to help sustain that growth and to provide a safe environment for our children, regular maintenance and upgrades or replacement of equipment becomes necessary.
This past year, the Owosso Soccer Club and the YMCA began to aggressively target the conditions of the fields, and the facilities. In consultation with local lawn and field technicians, an annual budget of between $3000 to $7000 was identified to begin to properly fertilize existing grass and control weeds that were preventing grass from growing. The lower budgeted number includes just fertilizing / weed control, the higher budget would include seeding, aeration and starting to build a sand base during the aearation process. This would also assist long term in leveling the fields, creating better drainage and promoting healthier grass.
As part of our commitment to soccer in Owosso, in April of 2017 the Owosso Soccer Club purchased 8 new goals for the complex at considerable costs. Not only safer and a uniform size, these new goals meet the changing US Soccer requirements for goal dimentions that are mandatory in the Fall of 2017.
We write today to ask for your help in continuing a program of annual maintenance. Fertilizer and weed control are a significant annual expense. We have committed ourselves to a program of this type to avoid a high dollar full replacement of the fields that could cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.
You may notice that we are asking for more than the annual budget. This will assist OSC in enacting a 3 year plan that will be put into place and if we can surpass our goal, we can seek to replace and purchase new picnic tables and other items.
Long term, we would love to continue to improve the facilities, including new bathrooms, gravel or millings for our parking lots and painting of all the wooden structures around the park. If you would like to assist, donate materials or items or volunteer time, please let us know.
