Service Learning Trip in Guatemala

Donation protected
Thank you for taking the time to visit my fundraising page! I have been incredibly blessed with the opportunity to go on a second service learning trip, this time to Guatemala! This past January I traveled to Nicaragua with a delegation of 16 physical therapy and occupational therapy students to work with children suffering from various neuromuscular and musculoskeletal conditions, and to make adaptive equipment to suit their needs.  That trip was truly humbling, made me re-assess my priorities in life, and also gave me a more definitive direction in terms of where I want to take my physical therapy career. So naturally, when I found out about a trip going to Guatemala this coming January I immediately applied, and was later selected as one of the 13 occupational and physical therapy students that will be representing Quinnipiac and the Albert Schweitzer Institute in January 2015.

The goals of this health care delegation are to introduce students majoring in physical and occupational therapy to the realities of health care in the developing world, as well as providing much needed services for the Guatemalan people. As we travel through the country, we will be treating primarily pediatric patients, and training local community members in the proper techniques for treating the children.

As I did in Nicaragua, I will also be designing and constructing adaptive equipment using mainly cardboard, glue, tape, contact paper, wooden dowels, and other simple items such as yoga mats. Below you can see some examples of items my delegation created last year including wheelchair inserts to help a child maintain a better position in their chair, tray tables to use on the wheelchair, and wedges for use in therapy sessions.  These items are surprisingly extremely durable when made correctly, and can last years.

I would like to take this opportunity to ask for your support for myself and our entire health care delegation. All monetary donations will be split between my personal travel expenses and our delegation to help buy medical supplies, adaptive equipment such as walkers and wheelchairs, sheets, and toys for the children. The clinics and homes of individuals where services will be provided are also in great need of any physical therapy, occupational therapy, or general medical supplies. Any contributions will help support our delegation’s mission and enhance the lives of those with whom we are serving.

With immense gratitude and love, I thank you for you for all of your help and support!

Nicole
