My name is Nicholas Enriquez. I am 17 years old and a member of the Montville Mustang Wrestling Team. Two years ago my mother Sandra Higgins was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma. Multiple Myeloma is a cancer that affects the plasma cells. Plasma cells are part of the body's immune system and makes antibodies to help fight infections. There is no cure for this type of cancer, but treatment can help you feel better and live longer.
I love my mother. She is outgoing, funny, loving and the strongest woman I know. Two weeks ago my mother had a setback when the doctors told her she now has pneumonia. It is so hard for me and my siblings to see my mother in this condition. This illness has brought many tears, and we have been fighting side by side with her, but it is a struggle everyday.
We are a proud family who has always been able to support ourselves. Both my parents are hardworking, but with this cancer, my mother is no longer able to work. All the kids have been pitching in to help around the house, and I recently got a job in hopes I can help my parents with all the bills that are pilling up. In addition, I am still trying to maintain my grades so I can graduate this year and continue on the wrestling team that has always kept me so grounded.
It is very hard for me to ask for help but I it has come to the point my family can no longer do it on our own. Any amount will help, and we will be forever grateful.
