CANCER HAS NO FACE OR AGE..IT DOES NOT DISCRIMINATE
Nichole: Mom, do I need a mamogram?
Mom: No, you begin having them a age 40, however, you should be doing your monthly exam.
Nichole: I do but I am not sure if I am doing it correctly.
Mom: Ok...let me model for you.
Two Days Later...
Nichole: Mom, I feel a lump and it is hurting.
Mom: Well, did you injure yourself someplace during your activities? It could be muscular.
Nichole: No, and it is really hurting.
Mom: Let's watch it for a few days then go to the doctor.
Three days later...
Nichole: The pain is still there.
Mom: Let's go see a breast doctor.
Needless to say, I was given the run-around because I was told I had to go to my primary care doctor first. My insistence paid off and I refused to take "NO" for an answer. Two days later, I was in the specialist, Dr. Margaret Thompson's office. This was fate becasue she was just as agressive with getting me the tests needed. After ultra sound and mamogram (same day as doctor's visit), the Radiologist requested a biopsy. Five days later, Dr. Thompson was sitting across from me with the news that I had breast cancer. While I have opted for the most agressive option, due to strong family history of breast cancer...maternal grandfather, his sister, and maternal aunt, this may not be the best and most effective for everyone.
My Message: Dear friends, please take this lesson from my experience and be vigilant and proactive when it comes to your health. I would not have discovered this scurge in my body if not for the conversation with my mother. We left no stones unturn in getting me the best of treatment but there are few things I want you to take from my expereince....
* BE PROACTIVE AND GET TO KNOW YOUR BODY
* DON'T EVER TAKE NO FOR AN ANSWER
* SORROUND YOURSELF WITH PEOPLE WHO
WILL BE THERE TO PROVIDE THE SUPPORT YOU
NEED DURING THESE CRISIS
