Nicaragua Service Trip

Donation protected
In April of 2015, a group of 6 City on a Hill Public Charter School (CoaH) students and 3 adults will be traveling to León, Nicaragua, to volunteer and experience living with Nicaraguan host families. In order for our students to participate in this life-changing experience, we need your help. We will be building a classroom for the 2nd grade class at a public elementary school in La Ceiba. The last earthquake in 2014 destroyed their classroom, so they have been having school outside since then.

CoaH students will be traveling with Alianza Americana, an independent English language school which also supports business in the Nicaraguan community. Students will stay with host families for the entire week we will be there, and have the opportunity to really experience the Nicaraguan culture and León community. Each day, students will work on their service project, and have time to explore León, as well as Managua.

Leading up to the trip, students will participate in lessons on Nicaraguan culture and history. They will become experts on Nicaragua, so that they are ready for the reality of life in Nicaragua. Nicaragua is the poorest country in Central America. Nearly 46% of the country lives below the poverty line. In the rural Nicaraguan communities, that number is even higher. Students on average only go to school for eleven years, and the conditions of the schools they attend are very troubling. Many schools are made of corrugated tin. When it rains, the floors become muddy. This certainly makes learning challenging for Nicaraguan children. CoaH students will be working to help to improve these conditions for Nicaraguan students.

CoaH students will return to Boston with a greater understanding of Nicaragua and the world. They will have a broader understanding of the world community, which they will share with other CoaH students and teachers.

Our students do need substantial financial support to participate in this trip. Each family must commit to $300 of their own money for this service trip. However, each student must raise an additional $2,400 in order to be able to travel in April of 2015. This money pays for airfare, travel in Nicaragua, lodging with host families, all meals, bottled water, trip insurance, and other necessities. Without your donation today, this unforgettable experience would not be possible for these students.

City on a Hill I students generally come from the neighborhoods of Roxbury, Dorchester, and Mattapan in Boston. Over 85% of our students come from low-income families. 65% of CoaH students are African American, 30% are Hispanic, and Asian and white students make up the remaining student population. This is a wonderful opportunity for students that have very limited financial means, many of which have no exposure to travel, let alone international service experience. This opportunity will certainly be life-changing, and you can help to make it happen for them.

Please consider making a lifelong difference to a CoaH student. Your impact would be greatest if you would consider sponsoring a student´s entire experience. However, we know it is going to take real teamwork to get to our fundraising goal. Donations in any amount will be gratefully accepted, and we encourage you to donate the amount that you would feel most comfortable with. You can donate here online, or send a check to the school. Checks can be sent to: City on a Hill Charter School 58 Circuit St Roxbury, MA 02119, and made out to ¨City on a Hill Foundation¨, memo: Nicaragua.

Please do not hesitate to contact me with questions or comments. Thank you again for considering contributing to this wonderful cause. We are all thrilled about this incredible opportunity for our students, and look forward to sharing our journey with you and the entire Boston community.
