Hello, my name is Zachary. I am one of forty-two kids in the NICU at WVU Children's Hospital. I was born only three weeks early, which in comparison, makes me one of the oldest kids here.
I want to share my story because I need help in paying it forward.
I am like any other joyful story until my doctors found out I only have one kidney. You see, they say I wasn’t very big and I was growing too slowly, which is why I needed to come meet everyone early. I was born November 7th. I picked that day, because it’s the perfect day for my birthday. I only weighed 4 pounds- 11 ounces. Luckily, I am very blessed! I have wonderful parents that can spend ALL day, EVERY day with me at the NICU. I am working hard to grow healthy and strong, because it makes my mom and dad smile. That makes me feel warm and good inside.
Not all mommies and daddies have the luxury of being with kids like me while they’re sick and in the NICU. Some mommies and daddies live far away or have to work a full-time jobs and still take care of other members of their families. Sometimes even my mommy and daddy must to go play with my big brother, Andrew. I sure can't wait to meet him and pull his hair. But when they're away I feel safe knowing they can check in on me from wherever they are with the help of the NicView camera. It’s a camera right on my bed that my parents can login to from anywhere on the Internet and see me!
There are 42 of us here, but they only have 10 NicView cameras. We don't like to share, but we understand other families want to help make their kids feel safe. That’s why we take turns. We get to use the camera for one week and then we pass it to another worried family.
This is why I need your help. I don't think it's fair that we have to share so early in life. Everyone of us should be able to feel safe knowing our families are watching when they’re away. We are very thankful and blessed to have the first 10, but with your sharing, we won’t have to!
