"Marcus Learns About the Different Types of Doctors"

A children’s story book that increases awareness about the health professions. Why is this significant? Minority recruitment and enrollment is a continuing challenge for medical schools. Part of the reason is lack of mentorship and exposure to the industry. That’s where this children’s storybook comes in to increase the awareness about health professions. In 2016-2017, medical school enrollments for African-Americans were 7.1% and Hispanics 6.3%, compared to Caucasian enrollment at 51.48% (AAMC, 2016).
It’s my intention with this book to provide practical information that starts the conversation as early as the first and second grades. Our young people should be learning about career options much earlier than high school.
The Plot
The book is based in the Bronx, New York, and tells the story of young, curious Marcus—who is interested in becoming a doctor. His grandmother’s resourcefulness leads them on an adventure to their local community health center, where they meet a variety of healthcare professionals. Marcus is exposed to relatable healthcare providers and role models.
I myself am passionate about this topic because I have met thousands of young people and many have mentioned they wished they had begun preparing for the sciences much earlier. Often times its just a simply matter of knowing your options and resources. This book will provide heavy visuals showing the practitioners in action so our young can begin conceptualizing how various doctors help people.
Austin Macauley Publishers has presented me with a first time author contributory contract. The publisher has agreed to provide the editorial, all illustrations, marketing, and promotions. In addition to U.S circulation, the manuscript will be filed with the British Library, the University of Libraries at Oxford, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Aberystwyth and Dublin.
The new author contributory contract is $2,700 UK. which is what I’m raising funds for. The book will be sold online as well as in bookstores. Any donations are welcomed. Feel free to contribute as little or as much as you would like.
