Relief fund for earthquake victims in Nepal: Earlham Chapter

On April 25, 2015, Nepal was hit by the biggest earthquake that Nepal has experienced in the last 80 years. The earthquake was of magnitude 7.9 and the epicenter was 77 km NW of Kathmandu, the nation’s capital. The aftermath has been devastating. The death toll, as of now, stands at 5000 and climbing, and the city is in ruins. The affected area has experienced some major aftershocks, with some of them as powerful as of magnitude 6.7.

The earthquake has left the nation crippled. Houses have been destroyed, major cultural heritages and historical monuments have been flattened. Many of these monuments, that were in UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites, have been reduced to rubble. Villages with houses that were not as strong, have been completely demolished. The death toll is still increasing with many more injured. The tragedy has caused the survivors unimaginable pain and suffering, both physical and mental. People have lost their dear ones, their homes and the city that they grew up in and loved. The victims, for safety, are still camping outside their houses. The hospitals have been crowded and medical supplies are falling short. The first aid services have not been enough for the affected people. Those who have lost their homes have not been relocated to safer places and do not have access to food, medicine and temporary shelter.

Please help us aid the victims of this crisis who are in desperate need of relief. Any donations, big and small are welcome. Every dollar counts in this situation as even a single dollar has the power to feed a victim for a day in Nepal. Please help the people of Nepal in this difficult time to rise above this crisis and recover. Thank you.

Sincerely,
Nepalese students at Earlham

About us:

My name is Ashutosh Rai and I am a sophomore at Earlham College. I write this on the behalf of all the Nepalese students here at Earlham. The last two days have been very difficult and frustrating for us. The uncertainty of the situation and how our families might be affected by it is a thought that has been on our heads. Seeing the death toll increase without any sign of slowing down has been hard. The pictures and videos of the earthquake and it’s destruction has caused each of us immense pain. But it does not even come close to what the people back home are experiencing. This fund raising campaign is a small effort from our side to aid our families and friends who are going through unimaginable pain and suffering. We are halfway across the globe from our motherland, where we long to be to support our families and friends now, but that is not going to stop us from trying to help. This is our first step towards recovery.

I would also like to add that the support and love that we have received here at Earlham has been amazing. Each message, each hug and each thought and prayer we have received has helped us recover a bit from this trauma. Some of us at Earlham have had our close ones affected too. Please keep the love flowing, we need it. Thank you from the deepest parts of our hearts.

The funds raised from this campaign will be directed towards Red Cross and other local NGOs involved. This summer, we will oversee the use of the funds by the local NGOs by ourselves in person and assist them on ground.
