Nau el Tubista is a recent immigrant whose passion and main source of income is playing the tuba, in concerts, birthday parties, quinceañeras, on Cinco de Mayo and in other celebrations. Last Friday night, Nau was out on his bike delivering messages, a second job he works to make ends meet, especially now that he has two young daughters in his life.
The Story: It was raining, and right in front of the Fox News headquarters on Sixth Avenue in Manhattan, Nau was forced to swerve to avoid a person who lurched drunkenly in front of him. He went over his bike handles and fell face-first into a subway grate.
I didn't know Nau before that night, but I was walking close behind and was the first person to reach him after the accident. When I reached Nau, he was dazed and blood was pouring from his mouth. I asked if I should call an ambulance but he begged me not to, explaining in Spanish that there was no way he could pay for it.
The surrounding stores were closed, but two men operating a nearby shawarma truck helped us with napkins for the bleeding and bags of ice for the swelling and pain. Only after a few minutes did Nau realize that his teeth were loose. When he did, he began to cry.
How would he play the tuba? How would he continue to support his family? What would he do?
The Need: Nau was able to see a dentist after his accident and has been diagnosed with fractures of his front four teeth as well as a fracture of the upper jawbone that houses these teeth. Even though the teeth were stabilized, the dentist has urged that they be removed as soon as possible. The location of the fracture means that the teeth are unable to be repaired.
Even though he has now been stabilized, the accident has led to a persistent infection in the gums around these teeth. In order to really treat the problem he will need to have the teeth extracted. This will have a massive negative impact on his ability to play the tuba, and therefore on his livelihood, and may also lead to social stigmatization and other knock-on problems in his future life.
To get Nau back to where he used to be, the dentist has recommended a plan that starts with an extraction of the front four teeth, a transitional denture, bone replacement, and dental implants as a permanent solution. He has offered to do this treatment only for the cost of the work to his office, which he estimates to be approximately $7,500. It will probably take nearly a year to complete all of this complicated work, but upon its successful realization Nau will be back to good again.
