NYC "Hidden Figures" Project Launch

Donation protected
Students need the opportunity to explore and learn deeply. We need your help to provide our students from World of Inquiry School #58 in Rochester, NY with an extraordinary learning experience in New York City.

Our precalculus class of 32 students will travel to New York City from January 26-29 to launch their project based on the math in the movie "Hidden Figures".  As an EL Education school our student learn through field study and work with experts to create excellent work that is authentic and meaningful. We feel there is need to engage our community in learning about the intersection of math, science, and race that this movie brings to light.

While we are in New York we will take advantage of unique cultural institutions. Tours of the Hayden Planetarium and the Math Museum will give us an opportunity to study how complex STEM ideas are communicated to the public. When we return students will use what they learned to create an exhibit that teaches the math behind the Apollo mission flight trajectories.

Your contribution will do so much more than expose students to an amazing city.

1. This project will give students from backgrounds that are underrepresented in math and science an opportunity to experience these fields and engage others that might not have the opportunity in learning about them.

2. These students are Rochester's best and brightest with their sights set on a four year college. They have requested that we visit colleges while in New York. This trip might be the one where they find their school.

3. Student leadership is important at our school and the opportunity to navigate New York City as a group is the ultimate "team building" activity. The lessons we have learned through outward bound experiences will be put to the test.

Our  students and our school community does what it can to make trips like this happen, students have paid as much as they can (many from their own paychecks), we have written grants and we have fund raised but we still need help.

Thank you in advance for your support.
We are not be able to provide our students with exceptional educational opportunities without your help.
