Hi everyone,
Because of the amazing traction and support for this fundraiser, I have increased the goal from $2000 to $3500. All donations will go directly to the Nuffield School for the Deaf and Blind to replace their: (a) kitchen and dining room roofs ($2000) and (b) highly utilized dining room benches ($1500). Please help us meet this new goal of $3500! Any amount of donation would be greatly appreciated! I've described as much information about the school and costs below for you to know all of the details before donating.
ABOUT THE SCHOOL:
The Nuffield School for the Deaf and Blind (NSDB) is located in Jaffna, Sri Lanka. During my visit to Sri Lanka in February 2018, I met with the principal to learn more about the school, what they offered students, and what they needed support with. The school currently provides education for 154 children who are visually or hearing impaired. Right now, it is entirely made up of students who are deaf. I was told they have a harder time (in comparison to those who are blind) integrating in society.
Along with teaching, the NSDB provides accommodation, food and clothing – all completely free of charge to students. They will even support students with bus fair so that they can afford to travel to the school. This is because many of the students are from single parent households or from families who are unable to support them financially or otherwise.
The school has funds to support the teachers and principal, but not for infrastructure maintenance. This is where we come in.
WHAT AM I FUNDRAISING FOR?
The school has a very detailed and organized Needs List that breaks down the list of things they need and the costs. While I would love to raise money for all of it, I am trying to be realistic. I spoke with the principal recently, and she has informed me that something that is most desirable right now are replacing the roofs in the kitchen and dining room benches. The $2000 I hope to raise will first go towards replacing the roofs.
THE KITCHEN AND DINING ROOM ROOFS ($1,965.93)
The roofs over the kitchen and dining room have not been replaced since it was first built in the 1950s. Leaks from heavy rainfall often results in damp rooms and electricity issues. This is the most urgent change that’s needed due to the health concerns. They would like to replace the asbestos roof to metal sheet roofing.
Breakdown of costs to replace roofs:
§ Total cost: 400,000 Sri Lankan rupees
§ Donations already received: 136,200 Sri Lankan rupees
§ Remaining funds needed: 263,800 Sri Lankan rupees = $1,965.93 CAD
THE DINING ROOM BENCHES ($1,502.31)
The dining room is the most entertaining place for the children. The tables and benches are highly used to feed all of the children for all three meals, hold meetings, and other activities. They are currently worn out. The NSDB has raised money for the tables, just not the benches. There are a total of 36 benches in the room - all are damaged or not in good condition.
Breakdown of costs to replace benches:
§ Total cost: 201,600 Sri Lankan rupees (5600 rupees per bench * 36 benches)
§ Funds needed: 201,600 Sri Lankan rupees = $1,502.31 CAD
Donations will first go towards the cost of replacing the roofs. Any additional donations will go towards replacing their dining room benches.
