What is CKD? Chronic Kidney Disease

On February 15, 2017 I was unexpectedly diagnosed with CKD and congestive heart failure. The symptoms had been there since December, but like many others, I explained them away as stress.

My life, as well as that of my wife, Kat, and 10-year-old son Nash, have been dramatically changed as I have worked with teams of physicians and specialists to manage my care. What I’ve subsequently learned is that this condition is the result of a previously unknown birth defect.

As of June, I have just 9% of kidney function left, otherwise known as end stage renal failure. Without dialysis four times per day, the fact is I wouldn’t survive. I am waiting to be put on the kidney transplant list, with so many others with lives and families, waiting for a healthy kidney.

While Medicare has covered 80% of the medical costs, we are still left with the balance and the skyrocketing costs of medication. Once I receive a kidney, those costs will increase exponentially because additional medications are needed to keep my body from rejecting the kidney.

In addition, we have life expenses that aren’t covered by insurance. These include but aren’t limited to:

·      Fuel to drive between medical appointments

·      Auto maintenance

·      Rides to appointments

·      Medical supplies including bandages, BP cuff, thermometer and more

·      Nutrition – I am on a very strict renal diet, which is tremendously expensive

·      Household needs

I am blessed to have a supportive family and friends and people who are praying for me on a daily basis. While I don’t know God’s ultimate plan for my life, I am certain He brings people into our lives who can help us in many ways. When I started this journey, I had no desire to ask for help financially, but I’ve learned that if I don’t ask, there are many who won’t know how they can help my family in a very tangible way.

Donations can also be deposited at any Key Bank branch under the My CKD Life/Chris Traver donation account.

If you want more information, please let me know. I appreciate your prayers and whatever you can spare to help my family and I.
