Museumand: The National Caribbean Heritage Museum

Donation protected
Museumand The National Caribbean Heritage Museum is a museum and more, dedicated to preserving Caribbean history, heritage and culture and celebrating the Caribbean contribution to the UK.

As a social history and community museum, we’re raising funds to support and extend our work around the UK to make sure the Caribbean contribution to life in Britain is understood, shared and celebrated.

Support Black culture

Now, more than ever, it’s vital to create Black-led spaces where Black culture can be created, discovered, explored, experienced, talked about and shared, both independently and as part of shared local and national heritage spaces. We need Black voices and experiences to lead on conversations around decolonising UK collections, to make sure the BlackLivesMatter movement leads to meaningful change.

As an all-female, Black-owned, Black-led, independent heritage organisation, we create unique and compelling exhibitions, events and resources exploring and celebrating Caribbean history, heritage and culture – from its earliest roots in the stories of Africa and the original inhabitants of the Caribbean, to the stories of Caribbeans living in the UK today - the Windrush Generation and their descendants.

More about our work

Our exhibition events have included everything from an edible exhibition exploring the legacy of colonialism and slavery through Caribbean food, to an award-winning documentary film about Nine Nights and Caribbean funeral traditions in the UK, to a collaboration with the National Trust’s Museum of Childhood inspiring conversations around representation and racism through Black dolls and toys.

We’re currently creating a book called 70 Objeks & Tings  celebrating the many Caribbean contributions to the UK and the tangible and intangible history of the Windrush Generation. We’re publishing each part as a free resource online to help people connect with Black culture during the Covid19 pandemic, and we’re hoping to publish the final collection as a complete printed book next year, to raise funds for our work and honour the iconic Windrush pioneers and their families.

Support a change for the better

We’re a museum without walls working throughout the UK and wherever we go, we make sure our work is original, creative, accessible and truly collaborative. We work alongside communities to share their stories and make sure people not only have a voice, but can create and contribute to their own cultural heritage.

By working with a range of institutions, including national museums, galleries, libraries and universities, we make sure that community-led Black Culture reaches a wide audience and becomes part of a more representative, inclusive, collaborative notion of shared British history and cultural heritage.

All the funds we raise will go to support our work and help to celebrate the Caribbean contribution to life in the UK. As an independent organisation, we are currently self-funded and sometimes receive small grants or partner funding for individual projects. With your support we can expand our work to champion community-led Black culture throughout the UK and beyond.
