Murph the Surf vs Rattlesnake Bite

[Important note]
Several friends requested we set up a "GO FUND ME" account to allow them a place where they could contribute $ to Murph's medical bills, care & healing...
Initially were absolutely opposed to doing so.
Our thought being that there are so many hugely enormous trajedies in the world --- adding to that reality was us being somewhat overwhelmed by the seriousness of Murphy's situation & yet so very grateful for the outpouring of emotional support offered to Murph by so many...
Prodded by friends once again, we have succombed & here is the "Murph the Surf Go Fund Me" page for those that have suggested it...
((no pressure at all---it's just here upon request))
Please know that all your healing hopes are MORE valued than anything & have truly carried us thru this harrowing, ongoing day by day ordeal...
The Murphy /Snakebite Story:
Well it happened early evening Sunday, Sept. 3rd 2017. Somehow, shortly into Murph's dinnertime, he must have encountered a rattlesnake in his corral.
(we had just fed him then left for an evening with friends)
Ever curious & friendly he probably went to investigate & sniff the moving 'stick' crossing the sand in his inclosure.
Evidently alarming it, the rattlesnake struck & bit him in the snout. We now believe, judging by the severity of his ongoing reactions to the bite, the snake must have "envenomated" him with every drop of poison it had on hand.
Four hours after leaving our Murph vital, happy & healthy---we returned around 10 pm to a VERY Sick-head completely swollen & obviously pained animal.
Immedietly called the night Veterinarian On-call who happened to be a Dr. Talbot. [not our ordinary vet-the venerable Dr. Gary Cranney] Dr. Talbot's telephone triage yielded the possibilities of a Snakebite, a Foreign body in the mouth or an irritated Tooth issue. After asking where we lived, he decided our situation could wait until a Dr. Cranney visit in the morning.
Our Mistake # 1 = not insisting he come over right then.
Fast forward to the day after the bite & beyond;
Murphy had sustained a life threatening Rattlesnake bite to the face. The toxins causing immediate damage & necrosis to contact nerves & tissue as it was desseminated thru his body via the blood stream.

Now three weeks out to date, 9/22/17, and poor Murph is still not clear of "productive wounds".
Since the bite he has received all prescribed care including anti-venom, a variety of Big Gun Antibiotics,  Anti-inflamatories, Intravenous fluids, twice a day injections when needed & radical daily wound care  .
Throughout, Murphy, (true to form), has shown tremedous strength and a notable desire to heal & live.
Because of Murph the Surf's remarkable spirit & kind co-operation with all means of therapy, (w/out the benefit of halter or head control), Dr. Cranney has nearly donated his time -(checking in twice a day during those first 10 days) . Not much precedence of care to draw from since a rattlesnake bite to the face in these parts is a very rare occurance.

We are equally committed to Murph's care as long as there is hope for a meaningful recovery & he is not showing any signs of suffering or imminent digression.
His healing will be a long & involved process---(with his biggest open wounds measuring 4"x 8" along the jaw & 6" around on his jowl---a few others have not yet stabalized in size)
From the get-go we all agreed to go the course of helping him medically & care-wise in all ways possible short of any truly radical heroics or cost prohibitive hosptilization...((*understanding his nature of being an 'outside kinda guy' so much so that stall confinement genuinely terrifies him*))

There it is.

The real fact is Murphy has been a kind, generous & sweet soul since he joined our animal family in 2000 @ age 6.
He has given innumerable safe rides to all sorts of people & positive horse nuzzles to everyone he has ever met regardless of age or confidence.
He's not a fancy guy...but he is a really good guy with a hopeful future & many friendly healed horse days ahead of him.

Sooooo if you you feel like adding some coin to his process thank you...
If not, thank you just as much for your caring thoughts & well wishes.
signed, Murph, Mara, Alf & fam.

*Sincerely apologize for this graphic imagine---
Note foto shows only one side of his head & is a greatly improved wound from where we started...radical, huh?
