Mrs. Johnson's Breast Cancer Battle

I'd like to speak about what qualities make up an exceptional teacher. Some teachers are good teachers and they know their content areas very well. Some teachers are good teachers and they connect with the students, heart and soul. Very rarely do you encounter a teacher that exemplifies both of these abilities, and Rhonda Choice-Johnson is an exceptional teacher.

I deliberately use the word exceptional because Rhonda teaches an exceptional student education-supported classroom in our school. She averages between one and a half and up to two years of academic growth in her students. These learners are the most needy, the most behind, and to her the most capable. She has high expectations for each and every one of her students.

As I write this, I am choking back on tears. Tragedy struck Mrs. Johnson in the first few weeks of this school year when she discovered that she had a lump in her breast. Her doctor rushed a biopsy and with the help of a dear friend to cover the costs, Rhonda learned that she had breast cancer.

With two children to support and a classroom that depended on her positive attitude and endearing demeanor she did not miss a beat.

She has continued to teach her heart out everyday despite the emotional rollercoaster that she is enduring as a single parent, no less. Mrs. Johnson is taking her first day off this Friday in order to have the lump removed by surgery. The anticipated costs for just this first surgery is in the thousands, and this does not include the time off work that Rhonda will need to recover fully so she can continue to make an impact on our children. She needs financial assistance, right away, to pay the looming medical costs that she incurs so that she can put her focus where it needs to be-- on recovering.

The situation for Mrs. Johnson is urgent. We all know that stress, fear, and depression are likely to occur when a person has  financial stress related to healthcare costs. Lack of financial security in a time like this will restrict Mrs. Johnson's medical choices and wreak emotional havoc on her psyche-- and we care about her too much to see that happen. Please, help Mrs. Johnson with as much of a financial donation as you can so she can get back to sharing her love of learning with students at our school as quickly as possible.
