Spirit Keeper Equine Sanctuary participated in the ASPCA annual Help A Horse Day celebration. This year we chose a specific Help A Horse Day cause - raising money to bring 10 at-risk horses from Montana to Colorado as part of our Re-Homing Assistance Program. The horses are here and now we are seeking support for one with medical issues who needs surgery and for additional hay and complete feeds to put needed weight on others. Please help if you can by donating and sharing!
In addition to caring for special needs horses at our facility Spirit Keeper Equine Sanctuary offers an Equine Re-homing Assistance Program for individuals no longer able to keep their horses. We investigate each situation individually, gather information about the horses in need of new homes, screen potential new homes for a good match, and mediate the transfer. In some cases we may bring the horses to Spirit Keeper Equine Sanctuary where they stay temporarily until they move to their new homes. In this case, the Montana horses need to come to Spirit Keeper first before moving on to new homes. The lease on the land where the horses are located is being terminated. These horses are well-bred Arabians, Paints, and Quarter Horses. The group includes trained ranch horses, broodmares, and yearlings. They are healthy but their owner is unfortuantely experiencing life difficulties which include divorce, loss of employment, and the loss of the land where the horses are kept. The owner has been working very hard to place these horses in good homes but time is running out for the remaining horses and they will soon be left without a place to go. Rather than see them go to auction where they risk ending up shipped to slaughter the remaining horses will be euthanized/put down and buried on Montana ranchland. In a final effort to avoid this the horses' caretaker reached out to Spirit Keeper Equine Sanctuary for help. We have agreed to bring the horses to our facility until they can be placed in new homes. We already have a few people interested in meeting the horses and will also work with area horse rescues to facilitate adoptions. What better way to celebrate Help A Horse Day than to help 10 horses find their way to loving homes! The horses are being issued Coggins and Health Certificates on April 20 and will begin their journey to Colorado sometime after that arriving in early May. Cost for this cause is going to include fees for the coggins and health certificates, fuel costs for travel, veterinary in-take exams, possible dental work upon arrival at Spirit Keeper, and feed/hay for up to one month while at our facility. These horses are ages one year and up, including a couple of very well trained riding horses about 8 years old. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE HELP US MAKE THIS HAPPEN!
