Help Mia's Mommy Stay Home (ongoing)!

Donation protected
2014 has been a rough year for Mia (and Teri & Barry).  In March, she had a really bad seizure that lead to some brain damage and other loss of hard-earned skills.

Throughout the rest of the Spring and early Summer, Mia was in and out of the ER/hospital.  Her most recent stay in late June has led the doctors to do further testing of kidney function, lung damage and strain on her heart.

As Mia undergoes these tests, travel and doctors appointments cause missed shifts for Teri (a pediartic nurse).  Please donate as you are able to offest the cost of trvael and to allow Teri to feel secure in the time she spends at home with Mia.

MARCH 2014:
Mia was released from the hospital and is at home. Unfortunately there was some brain damage caused by the seizures.

Teri's dream is stay home with Mia for a month (or maybe more, depending on your generosity) to work with her to regain skills she has lost. Teri's job as a nurse is very demanding and her income is vital to the family's finances. Realistically, she cannot just stop working for too long of a period of time, but feels that Mia's wellbeing depends on it.

Teri and Barry's lives are put on hold whenever Mia has a medical crisis. This is our chance to help out! Give what you can to help allow Teri to stay at home with precious Mia!

(Mia loves Pool Therapy! Waiting to see her excited laugh again!)

MIA'S STORY:

Mia was born very early due to a car accident, involving her birth parents. She was born at RMH in Harrisonburg, VA at 1lbs 3 ounces and was 12 inches long on January 30th, 2006. She was transferred to the NICU at University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, Virginia. It was here that Teri & Barry met Mia for the first time on June 28th, 2006. They became her foster parents and cared for her while she was in the NICU. On September 5th, 2006 Mia was discharged from the NICU and delivered by ambulance to her new home. At this point Mia has already undergone many medical procedures, surgeries, and various life saving measures. Mia was already a miracle and now was The Williams'' miracle, or as her daddy likes to call her "a beautiful disaster". Mia came with her very own home ventilator with a tracheostomy tube, a feeding tube, and home Oxygen.

The first year was very eventful for Mia as she was taken back to the hospital for two brain surgeries in October and November to treat her hydrocephalus (fluid on the brain). A shunt was placed in her brain that goes down into her abdomen and drains spinal fluid. After this surgery, mommy & daddy noticed an amazing difference, she was much happier and less fussy. She was weaned from her ventilator, feeding tube and trach were both removed. Mia was eating and breathing all on her own.

Her second year was very eventful as well because she became Mia Frances Williams and was adopted into Teri & Barry's family on August 17th 2008.

The next three years continued to prove that Mia was no ordinary little girl. She was making milestones that many thought would never happen. Those of you, who know Mia, understand when it is said, "that there is much more to Mia than meets the eye". Although, there is an awful lot that meets the eye! Mia has the most beautiful smile that you have ever seen and she is quite possibly one of the happiest children ever known. She is strong, stubborn, and courageous. If she wants something there is nothing that can stop her! She loves ice cream, Reese cups, peanut butter milkshakes, and chicken nuggets! Her hero is big and purple.....BARNEY! Music is her center. She can be calmed, entertained, reassured, and has learned most of her vocabulary through music. She also loves the water; this includes bath, ocean, and swimming pool. Her spastic muscles turn to noodles when she gets in the water.

She is a fun and happy little girl who continues to rise above her challenges!
